Experiments in Ethics - Honesty, Deception, and Bystander Effects

It is not "What Would You Do?" but what do people do. And why. Is it just the situation?

  1. This experiment is a good example of one that is not too extreme or novel; in fact it happens all the time. Therefore I feel like the situation would not overwhelm the person, and so their normal behavior may have a chance come in.

The policeman spoke out because his job is all about defending those who are wronged. He's responsible for putting plenty of people in jail. His reasoning had to do with treating others as you would yourself. "He could have done that to me" he had said.

However this reason could apply to the first woman who did not help. Perhaps she did not want to hold the responsibility for ratting out the man and causing him to be put in jail.
We are all in need of money, and so regular people may be able to empathize with the thief. So if he is thrown in jail, people can easily imagine it to be themselves as well.

Once the situation is less demanding, virtue ethics steps in.

  2. This is ridiculous. I don't know how any of those customers could just let that clerk get away with stealing those winning tickets. How would those people feel if they were the ones getting rippied off, possibly losing out on hundreds of dollars. Do any of them have any integrity or honesty? I feel that there is some jealousy involved here, where because none of the customers were winners and the other person was, they became jealous of their winnings.

  4. This experiment is far more realistic than the other ones we have been watching in class. Something like this happens everyday, in various situations.

I think this goes along well with Alzola's arguments against Situationism. Character traits are definitely playing a huge role and it is more evident when the 'situation' is more realistic.

The last gentleman said he is on welfare and is struggling, and he still refused to allow the clerk to steal $ 290 from the woman who seemed as though she was not struggling.

Overall, in realistic, day-to-day situations, character traits are a crucial element in why we take the actions we take.

  5. I was taken back by the behavior of these people. I am surprised by the first lady especially. She said she did not see anything when in reality she saw that it was a winning ticket. I feel that the more common response would be to pretend you are clueless as to the situation. I am not saying this is the right action, but it seems to me that this would be a common response. Still, you say a lot when you keep your mouth shut.

  7. I found it interesting that a lot of the people who spoke up were with someone else, which I think does make it easier because you have that back-up support even if they don't say anything, and like the conformity experiment we saw in class with the guy who said the same answer as everyone else, when you have a majority on one side it's easier to gain the courage to speak up versus when you're the only one arguing with the clerk.

In regards to the last guy, I think the difference between him and the other people was that he really understood the significance that $290 makes in a person's life having been through a different financial situation. This demonstrates how well a person's character plays a role in the choices they make because the last gentlemen could have easily pocketed the money had he been of a lesser character and not learned lessons from his past.
